it depends on how much hair you have and how coarse it is, take it this way: every hair follicle zapped is one sting, if you have many close together there are more zaps therefore more stinging. For me i almost passed out, i know people that feel nothing at all.

My wife said it was less than someone snapping you with a rubberband.

I had my bikini area done and it was very painful, however, I survived and am very glad i had it done. The pain was worth the gain of permanent hair reduction. Next time though, I will take the practitioners advice and use a topical anaesthetic cream such as emla (available at pharmacies in Canada). Apparently, these creams make the procedure very tolerable with very little pain. Without the cream, it felt like each individual hair follicle was being burnt, and the darker the hair and more dense it was, the more it hurt. Having ice packs applied afterwards also really helped reduce the pain. It mainly just hurt during and immediately after, and then not much in the days following.

I've just started laser hair removal (Hi all, this is my first post!) and I've found it very painful, though bearable. The smell of burning hair and the sound of hair jumping out of the follicles was quite off-putting too.

I've had four treatments, and each time it is more painful, I would put it on the same level as waxing.

LASIK is quicker healing, less painful, more predictable, and does not require the use of strong steroids, making it the procedure of choice.
